Further to Matthew's article about using sand as a substrate, I have decided to give it a go and convert my "tank of death" into a holiday home for my 'odd-man-out" golden oscar and my Zebra Obliquidens.

As you can see, they appear to be quite happy at present, despite being a mix of Old and New World Cichlids. Tomorrow, they may well be joined by an aggressive female Blue Acara that I have agreed to re-home. Hopefully, this eclectic mix might work out due to the amount of space and the lack of fish. (Three fish in a 150 litre tank - I think that this could work).

As can be seen, it is a 'minimalist' setting, ideal for a strange mixture of cichlids in transit between tanks (adjusting to pH) and ideal to appear on 'The House Doctor'

Verdict on the sand is out at present, but I believe that it might be easier to clean than gravel. I am a bit concerned that it could irritate the gills of the fish as it is quite fine 'play sand'., but I will be keeping a very close eye on water parameters and the health of the fish over the coming weeks, especially as I still don't know what the 'mystery illness' was that wiped out the Carpinte fry.

The longer term goal is to put the Oscar into tank 2 with the other 2 Tiger Oscars, and to move out the spare male severum into this tank once the pH's are aligned. These are currently 6.4 and 7.6, so I have to do a long slow fix before any more transfers can happen.
