We have noticed over the last few months that our male Siamese Fighting Fish, which we keep in a Juwel Vision 180, enjoys exploring the depths of the Juwel filtration system.

Every time that we take out the pump to change the sponges, he makes a point of disappearing into the hole so that he has to be scooped back into the tank before we can re-fit the filter. We now have to lower the water level to well below that of the hole in order to carry out filter maintenance, just to stop him disappearing.

It also turns out that these guys are prone to jumping out of the tank too; something that I didn't realise until seeing this article on Christie's blog

Nippyfish: A Betta Blog

We keep another male Betta in a tank without a hood and, so far, he has shown no signs of trying to escape. Hopefully, this will continue.

Back to the first point, I wonder how many fish have been lost by crawling into the Juwel filter during cleaning? I'm certain that many a Loach, Catfish or similar have been lost in this temporary 'new home'.

I thought that it would be worth bringing this potential hazard to people's attention as it is something that I would never have thought of until I either saw it for myself or I lost a fish in the filter. I'm sure that this problem is equally inherent in all the other Juwel tanks, so a lot of fish have probably been lost in this manner.
