I figure that, as I haven't made a posting for some time, it was about time for me to put index finger to keyboard once again.

The reason for my absence, if you had not guessed, is that HC has been on holiday - both away and then at home. The 'at home' bit involved the visit of Nigalius from Hackney to the frozen north. The details of Nigels visit will not be covered by myself, as I think that it is more appropriately covered on his own web site:-

The Chronicles of Nigalius - Nigel meets the Hyperboreans

Talking of  waiting a long time, I am pleased to be able to announce that yours truly has at last managed to get 4 Uarus home alive and well and is now a bone fide Uaru keeper once again. This may not sound too earth shattering to most of you but, as I have been a moderator on Uaru Forum for some time now, is has been a little embarrassing holding this exalted position 'sans uaru'.

Any way, enough of this waffle for now. Here is a shot of one of the new boys in his new home.

The Uarus are from 4" to about 7" in length, 2 have red eyes and 2 have amber eyes, and appear to have 'paired off' according to eye colour. Within 36 hours of them moving into their new home, the amber pair had deposited about 100 eggs on the side of a piece of bog wood, and within 48 hours they had obviously discovered a taste for Uaru Omelette!!

Never mind, I believe that these fish take several attempts to 'get it right' and, even then, they have a taste for their fry.

Having kept Uaru before, I am aware of how difficult they are to keep healthy, as the slightest thing seems to upset them. I also have to leave the lights on outside to house so that they have their own 'night light' as they spook easily in the dark.

Hopefully I will have more success than last time where, after successfully raising them for about 5 months, they all succumbed to a bad dose of velvet introduced into the tank by an unquarantined plec. I have since fitted a UV sterilizer into Tank 2 - where they currently reside, and will also be fitting one onto Tank 15 (their future home) for them when it arrives.

Plenty of other things have happened over the last couple of weeks, but I will save those for future postings.
